Sissification is not the answer
Like it or not the world is competitive. Nothing is gained by artificially hiding that from children until they're suddenly dumped into reality. Shouldn't schools be focusing on education and merit while leaving issues of self-esteem to parents?
Perhaps I'm old fashioned in thinking schools should teach and parents should parent.
CNN reported a growing trend in schools to protect self-esteem of students by removing competition, social cliques, and the ages-old concept of hard work for reward.
From the article:
"Gone are the days when a kindergartner dropped a handful of party invites in the classroom cubbyholes of their closest buddies. Today, if anyone is excluded the invitations can't be handed out at school."
"At some schools, a second-grader can't offer paper valentines or heart-shaped candies to a short list of pals and secret crushes anymore. They give cards to everyone or no one at all."
"In many towns, scorekeeping no longer happens at soccer or softball games played by kids under 8 or 9. Win or lose, every player in the league gets a trophy at the season's end."

My niece received a 'student of the month' award last year in middle school. Her grandmother still talks about it (regardless of her nearly failing her classes). It turns out that the award is cycled through all students in the class regardless of grades or attendance.

It's kind of stupid because the way things are parents can just blame the schools for any problems their kids might have, when really they're just terrible parents.
