More Proof of an Overstretched Military

In a glaring example of the US Army and Marine Corps' manpower being stretched beyond their limits, thousands of Navy Sailors are being trained on Army bases for ground operations.



Sailors, trained and experienced in duties primarily involving waterborne missions aboard ships, are now being rerouted to Army bases for 12-day training programs to prepare them for ground missions in an attempt to "ease the strain on Army and Marine Corps units."

In related news, a GAO report found the US Army is continuing to employ criminals as security guards despite 3 warnings in the past 3 years.

Civilians are increasingly used as guards of military facilities; a job normally reserved for military personnel who are unable to fill the requirement due to the current tempo of deployments.

The GAO cited a consistent lack of proper background checks which may pose a security threat for the very installations these guards are being paid to protect.

At one unidentified facility, "61 security guards with criminal records had been hired, including two dozen with felonies and one with an outstanding warrant."
