Symbols of Protest: Illegal Immigration

Protestors throughout the US have been peacefully attempting to influence the outcome of immigration reform being debated in Congress. Standard protestor arguments range from wanting equal treatment for providing labor, to desiring a legal status and even citizenship regardless of how they entered the US.


However, many of these protestors carry the Mexican Flag, others have replaced US flags, have been seen holding US flags upside down, or have placed the US flag below the Mexican one.


In Texas, a public (as in your tax dollars) high school principal raised the Mexican flag over the school in support of student marches. The school district has ordered it to be removed, citing its apparent display of allegiance to another country.


Some protestors argue their use of the Mexican flag is purely a sign of their heritage. As a veteran, when I see a flag raised with someone shouting "Mexico", it seems far more like an allegiance to a foreign nation.
